The 5 most exciting construction projects in the world right now

Latham Australia

The global construction industry witnessed some extraordinary examples of ingenuity. Concepts such as smart buildings and vertical gardens featured in headlines, and builders and architects around the world worked together to transform the industry and break away from tradition.
The push to reach new creative heights is set to continue as we look at the construction trends for 2021. Construction is evolving like never before, as the entire industry rallies its innovative prowess and design thinking to build the city of the future.

At Latham, we’ve rounded up five samples of the most impressive, inventive and downright amazing construction projects that are on our watchlist.

1. World One, Mumbai India

A new record for the world’s tallest skyscraper will be set in 2016, as India’s World One towers are built. Spanning 117 stories over a dizzying 442 meter height, the residential complex will be erected in Mumbai — a city known for its surprising ability to mesh together the very poorest, and the very richest, extremes of society.

For a city that’s often associated with slum housing, the World One tower ― which consists of 300 luxury apartments with interiors designed by Giorgio Armani ― seems an unusual contrast. Alongside sky-skimming views of the Arabian Sea, some of India's wealthiest residents will have access to pools, gyms, an indoor cricket pitch and pavilion...all at their front door.

2. Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta

Underway since 2014, the Mercedes-Benz stadium will be nearing completion this year (although it's not expected to formally open until 2017). Home of the Atlanta Falcons (that's American football, for those who mainly follow Aussie codes), this extraordinary construction sets itself apart from other sports stadiums through its unique and practical design. This video shows how the stadium’s innovative roofing system — comprising eight panels which resemble petals — unfurls like a lens, revealing the venue’s core to the sky.

3. Istanbul New Airport, Istanbul

Originally announced during a bid to host the 2020 Olympics, Istanbul’s $5.6 billion New Airport project went ahead despite losing out on securing the mega sporting event. While some might be surprised to see the world's largest airport undergoing construction in this location, Istanbul is in fact a rapidly expanding hub for international transit. Over 80 million passengers are already reported to move through the city’s two airport terminals each year, and with the new terminal in place, even higher levels of traffic are anticipated. Once complete, New Airport will accommodate 150 million passengers across three terminals (including two smaller satellite terminals constructed nearby).

4. Dawang Mountain Resort, China

One of the most bizarre construction projects expected to be revealed in 2016 will be the Dawang Mountain Resort Deep Pit Ice and Snow World. Operating as a 5-star hotel resort and entertainment park, the construction will include 270 holiday suites, an indoor ski slope and water park. What makes the project particularly fascinating is its geographical position; the resort will be built across a cliff face, surrounding a natural quarry. Set in a 3,000 year old city which is renowned for its historical and religious landmarks, the built landscape will a labyrinth of islands, pathways, gardens, and a 200ft waterfall that pours into the depths of the quarry below.

5. Zlotta 44, Poland

The tallest residential building to ever be constructed in the European Union, Zlotta 44 will represent a bold development in luxury living — a concept which, in the past, has not been synonymous with Poland’s national identity. Architecturally designed to represent Warsaw’s past and the historical period of post-war reconstruction, Polish-born architect Daniel Libeskind says his inspiration was to “create a residential building that introduced a new style of urban living to the city.”
